Bill Warwick and the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery win Landmark Building Award

June 9th, 2016

We would like to congratulate our very own Bill Warwick, the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery and the Mount Moriah Cemetery Preservation Corporation on receiving the AIA Philadelphia Chapter ‘Landmark Building Award’! The award was given in recognition of the work being done to preserve and restore the historic 1855 Mount Moriah Cemetery and Gatehouse originally designed by Stephen Decatur Button, and it is the final resting place for over 100,000 individuals with many being veterans (from the Revolutionary through the Gulf War). The Friends of Mount Moriah organized in 2011 after the city ceased operations of the cemetery due to the conditions of the grounds. In 2015, the Mount Moriah Cemetery Preservation Corporation was granted receivership by the Orphans Court of Philadelphia and became stewards of the property in cooperation with the friends. The Friends organize monthly restoration events and educational tours of the grounds. We extend our biggest congratulations to the recipients on their stewardship and their well-deserved recognition!
